The Back-to-School Shift

Every August, it's as if a new door opens. In many ways, it feels like a second New Year. Students and parents measure time by grade levels, sports seasons, and after-school activities, and their routines are completely reshaped as a result. While this seasonal transition is often overlooked, it affects virtually everyone in your community.
So, what does that mean for your salon?
Think about all the people connected to your business: staff, customers, suppliers, and neighboring businesses. Every one of them is affected by the back-to-school season in some way.
You may have employees heading off to college, adjusting their availability, or balancing classes and work. Customers are reorganizing family schedules, coordinating drop-offs and pick-ups, and managing increased expenses. Local businesses are swapping out summer promotions and preparing for the fall season.
As a salon owner, you can probably think of several ways this annual shift impacts your business. Rather than viewing it as a challenge, consider it an opportunity.
Let's talk strategy.
Success in the salon industry often comes down to staying one step ahead. Anticipating changes allows you to better support both your team and your customers. Start with your staff. Your team may look very different by the end of August, so having scheduling conversations early and hiring proactively can be a game changer during this transition.
Next, think about your customers. We already know what they're experiencing this time of year: busy days, changing routines, and added responsibilities. The question is, how can your salon become part of the solution? Changing routines, early mornings, and new environments can all add stress to daily life. Why not give your customers an opportunity to unwind?
Think of it as the tanning industry's version of a sweet treat.
A back-to-school promotion built around the message, "You’re working really hard right now! Come relax with us for a little while," can be incredibly effective. Whether it's 10 minutes in a UV bed or 30 minutes of red light therapy, you're offering customers a chance to step away from the whirlwind that August often brings. By positioning your services like this, it causes their brain to associate your salon with the dopamine hit of a reward, and the brain loves dopamine.
It's a win-win situation. Your salon generates additional traffic, and your customers get a few well-deserved moments to themselves.
While you are catering to everyone else, don’t lose sight of your own education. The ability to keep learning is important for everyone, from young students to seasoned scholars. From a business perspective, continuous learning is essential to a salon's growth and success. As leadership expert Warren Bennis famously said:
"Success in management requires learning as fast as the world is changing."
At Heartland, we're committed to giving our salon partners every opportunity to learn, grow, and develop new ideas for their businesses. Through industry-leading podcasts, webinars, blogs, and events on the National stage, we provide resources that help you stay informed and competitive. This year, our National UV, Sunless & Wellness Summit is shaping up to be the biggest educational event in our history. With more than 30 classes, including product training, certifications, and sessions covering specialized industry topics, there's something for everyone.
So don't leave learning behind when August ends. Join us in February and continue investing in your success.
As your community settles into a new routine for the next nine months, stay alert for the opportunities that emerge during this seasonal transition. While summer may bring longer days, warmer weather, and a break from routine, August creates its own momentum. The salon owners who recognize and adapt to these shifts will be the ones best positioned for success in the months ahead.
